In Nicky’s words:
“Most of my life has been pressured into pursuing the conventional idea of ‘success’. ‘Be an impeccable student’, ‘join the best clubs’, ‘study the most lucrative major’, ‘get the highest paying jobs’. While I’ve thoroughly enjoyed these pursuits, I always felt something in my life was missing. Since I was a kid I had an innate fascination with stories. Behind any great endeavor of human history, be it an adventurous tale of exploration or the thrilling founding of a world-altering company, there lies a narrative. Narratives serve as the foundation for identity, defining an individual’s or group’s past and constructing aspirations for the future. I’ve recently come to understand that what was missing from my life was the pursuit for the passion of storytelling. This passion has since manifested into the art of film making, a hobby I now get to pursue in my education. If there’s one lesson the University of Texas has taught me it’s that there are many ways to change the world, maybe I can try by telling a story.”
The Love Like Nicky Scholarship was established to encourage students to share their narrative and leave their mark. This scholarship is awarded to hardworking students dedicated to pursuing their passion. Tell us your story.
Student is required to read https://thedailytexan.atavist.com/nicky-cumberland and encouraged to listen to Nicky’s Graduation Speech.
