My son Nicky loved listening to Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant Massacre.” I believe he especially appreciated the creative genius of the humorous song, which doesn’t disclose the message until late into the long melodic ballad.
This morning I gave an address at the national conclave of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, held at the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville VA. It is the 150th anniversary of the fraternity that Nicky had joined. I met many lovely men yesterday and today and was grateful for the opportunity to address approximately 1500 delegates from around the country.
Prior to my speech, they played the tribute video on the following link that was produced by one of Nicky’s dearest old friends (and a partner in many of his adventures) – Jake Groesbeck.
This is an anti hazing post.
Together with other grieving parents, our family has addressed US Senators and congressional representatives in DC and worked on Texas law changes in Austin to help create awareness.
In mid August, our family will be meeting with the Dean and other administration officials at The University of Texas to discuss hazing reform.
I promised the delegates at the conference today that I would repost Nicky’s video so they could share it with their respective organizations back home and make a statement regarding hazing.
We will be showing the results to the University.
